Staples for a Gluten Free Kitchen

Becoming gluten free, whether by choice or medical necessity, can be overwhelming. The following tips may help ease the transition when making your kitchen gluten free friendly.

Two Toasters.

If you share a kitchen with someone who is not gluten free, purchasing a second toaster is a must. Another alternative would be to get a four (or more) slot toaster and clearly label which slots are gluten free. However, when friends or family come to visit, they often don’t pay attention or notice the distinction. To avoid counter clutter and cross contamination, keep the gluten free toaster out of sight unless the gluten free person needs it.

Cornstarch. If you need a thickener, cornstarch is a perfect substitute for normal flour and doesn’t leave any strange aftertaste.

Color-coded labels. Being gluten free is difficult enough for an adult to navigate, so imagine how daunting it can be for a child (or a parent of a child) with Celiac disease who doesn’t understand the importance of maintaining a gluten free diet. Color-coding snacks can be a lifesaver, especially if the child can’t yet read. Place the designated color sticker on the child’s snack boxes and easily accessible treats so they know which are safe for them.

Fully stocked spice rack.

Many of the prepackaged seasonings in grocery store aisles, such as chili mix, fajita mix, etc., contain gluten. However, it’s easy to make your own version with spices. For the convenience of the prepackaged versions, make a large batch and store them in an air-tight container.

Applesauce. Gluten free baking is tricky, and often the end product ends up crumbly or dry. Toss a bit of applesauce to the mix to add in some moisture.

Blender. So many recipes call for “cream of” soups — cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, etc. The gluten free versions of these soups are often too runny to use for cooking. It’s easy enough to make your own by tossing the ingredients in the blender and pulsing a time or two. Bonus tip: microwave the soup in increments, stirring often until you reach the desired consistency. Blenders are also great to make your own cauliflower or broccoli rice.

Spiralizer.

Spiralized vegetables are a great substitute for pasta if you are on a gluten free diet or are just trying to cut carbs. You’re also not left feeling disappointed that the gluten free pasta didn’t taste like “normal” pasta. Once you spiralize, you’ll never look back.

Disinfecting wipes. These belong in all kitchens, but are especially necessary in shared kitchens to avoid the possibility of cross contamination. Wipe down the counter often, paying extra attention to areas where gluten products were located.
