The Last Time I Saw You

You were just nine years old

Thandolwethu L Ndlovu from author’s family album

I remember the last time I saw you. You were just nine years old. We were talking and laughing as you showed me your lego collection on the living room floor.

Your dream was to go to Legoland. I promised I would take you there one day soon. You gave me a toothy grin as you asked, “How soon is soon Auntie?”

You believed every word I said. It reminded me of the time when you’d just learnt how to talk. Your vocabulary was still limited, with words that only your mummy could understand.

“What’s he saying now?” I would ask her as I swung you round and round in the garden, your little legs flailing. Your mum would translate and we’d enjoy a hearty laugh.

As soon as I put you down you’d scream, “Do it again Auntie! Do it again!”

I’d feign confusion as I picked you up and held you in my arms. “What must I do little man?”

You would wiggle out of my grasp, hold up your hands and repeat your request. “Do it again Auntie! Do it again!”

I would hold your little hands and swing you round and round again. Your laughter filled the air. You were so happy, so full of life, so full of joy. You brought so much happiness to our family.

Do you remember that day we went paintballing? Well, you played the games and I watched. You had so much fun! If only we could go back in time, and do it all again.

You’re building castles in the sky now, you’re swinging on the clouds with angels and paintballing in another realm.

God knows how much I miss your smile, your kind heart and your appetite for life.

The last time I saw you, you were just nine years old. Those years flew by so quickly and before I could get my head around it, you were a strapping young teenager, and…
