What to do with a gift card to a bankrupt company

So, what do you do with a gift card once a retailer announces their bankruptcy? We’ve compiled a list in case you hold a gift card to a brand that’s fallen from the retail apocalypse.

It’s important to note that bankruptcies can be tricky, and while they announce Chapter 11, it doesn’t always mean the retailer is going away. Be sure to check the retailer’s website to see if there are any changes to their gift card program or if they’ve announced a date when they will stop honoring gift cards.

Use your gift card ss soon as you hear that a store is closing and there’s still a presence either online or in-store. That way, you won’t be stuck with a worthless card and can recoup dollars.

Liquidation sales are a great time to get deals from a store closing. Depending on the retailer, you can get everyday items, or find great items to gift to during the holidays.

Business Insider compiled a full list of 2019 retail bankruptcies and note if the stores will remain open or closed forever. Do you have any other gift card tips when it comes to store closings? Let us know in the comment section below.
