YouTube scammers stole over 1.5 million XRP from investors
The organizers of the fraudulent distribution of cryptocurrency on YouTube embezzled 1.543 million XRP ($ 454,000). Such data in its new study are provided by the company Xrplorer.
According to her observations, 60% of the assets went to the fraudsters ‘wallets from the Coinbase exchange, another 25% — from the users’ personal wallets. Analysts call Binance the main channel for money laundering. Supposedly, 508,000 of the 839,000 laundered XRP were passed through it. The second most popular service for this was NiceChange with 273,000 XRP. At the same time, Binance users accounted for only 2–3% of the funds sent to scammers.
Fake cryptocurrency giveaways are conducted on behalf of well-known companies or technology industry participants. Investors are encouraged to send a transfer to the specified address in order to increase their assets, but they do not receive any reverse transactions after that.
Xrplorer CEO Thomas Silkjer called on Coinbase and other exchanges to actively warn users of the consequences of their actions if they try to send a transaction to a verified scam. The company tries to tag such addresses before fraudsters take out the assets, preventing them from being returned to their rightful owners.
XRP-issuer Ripple has filed a lawsuit against YouTube, accusing the video hosting site of not taking sufficient measures to prevent damage to its reputation and losses to investors.
