A Fate Accepted

I sat on my porch overlooking the city below. My wife and I have accepted our fate. In the distance the city burned, screams echoed across the valley, and gunshots cracked.

I understand their reactions. They weren’t ready to die.

My wife sat down beside me, taking my hand in hers. We sipped our coffee as it approached.

I took in her beauty, inhaled her scent, felt her soft skin.

I told her “I love you,” for the final time.

I could feel the heat increasing around me.

Then closed my eyes as it approached.
