The funeral was important and Mr Briggs, the undertaker, made sure everything went well for the burial of the prominent local woman. She had been a businesswoman and, in later years, the Mayoress.

Nobody realised, of course, but the body was buried missing all evidence of pubic hair.

Mr Briggs got home that evening and walking into his empty house, he poured himself a drink. He went upstairs and unlocked the back bedroom and opened the drawer of a dark chest.

There were ninety-nine small plastic packets, all with hand-written labels.

Smiling, his hand went to his pocket.
