Physiotherapy for Vertigo and Balance

Physiotherapy for Vertigo and Balance

Many people are often affected by vertigo, which can cause discomfort and nausea. Vertigo is the sensation of dizziness or spinning. Many people may feel the sensation of them spinning or feel the external surroundings spinning. This is often caused by an inner ear infection, head trauma, aging, stroke or due to the inflammation within the inner ear. However, the most common cause of the onset of vertigo is BPPV. This stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and occurs due to clusters of calcium particles clumping together within the ear canal. Some symptoms of vertigo include nausea, dizziness, headaches or even hearing loss.

Your physiotherapist may provide vestibular rehabilitation to help you manage and treat your vertigo. This treatment typically begins by collecting your health information and records to create an effective treatment plan based on your required needs. Your physiotherapist will perform maneuvers such as a Head Roll or Dill-Hallpike to determine if it caused due to BPPV. The treatments for vertigo include various maneuver or modalities such as the Eppley Maneuver. This is a manual technique that is pain free and extremely effective.

Vestibular Physiotherapy for Balance:

Having improper balance can impact the quality of ones life. Balance is the ability of to maintain their base of support (BOS) or equilibrium. Improper balance can occur due to sports injury, vehicular accidents, chronic illness or due to the onset on BPPV. You should consider visiting a physiotherapist if you experience dizziness or lose balance during simple tasks. These tasks can be as simple as rolling over in bed, doing quick head movements or bending over.
