5 Ways To Make You Succeed In Life

Life is a journey and not a destination

In life we all have moments whereby we feel hopeless,defeated or simply not motivated to do what we know we are supposed to be doing.When things do not go our way the first thought that comes to our mind is to just give up ,go back to how we were doing things in the past because it feels safer, easier, familiar and is undoubtedly the path of least resistance.

No-one is immune from those feelings, or moments of self-doubt and i occasionally go through them myself more often than i might want to admit.However, there are a few things that have given me strength time & time again,so i want to share them in this article as they are going to help you overcome those dark moments and give you the motivation you need in order to continue marching and not easily revert on the important choices that you make in order to improve your life daily.

How badly do you want change in your life? Really, take a moment to ponder about this question because if the thought of an improved life sounds glamorous then you are not yet ready for the battle ahead.To attain the life you want there is going to be endless hurdles to go through, and how badly you want to improve your current life is going to be put to the test on a daily basis!.I am not saying this to scare you off, but rather to be realistic of the battle ahead and that is why i have these five things to propose that might hopefully help you to overcome the fear and anxiety that you will likely face whenever you decide to take those first few courageous and bold steps.

There are countless times that i have told myself that i will start working on something,stop a bad habit,refrain from eating certain foods and the list goes on.The easiest way i found myself failing at achieving any of those goals was by telling myself that i would start tomorrow, next week or next month, <insert future time here>,basically anytime that is not today or right now.This lack of urgency has psychologically been proven to be very effective at putting us at ease.The human mind is smart enough to always improvise new ways of giving you a false sense of accomplishment or achievement. Your mind is tricked and you will defer an activity that is important but feels like it could be boring.Instead, to make yourself feel better you focus on something that has little to no importance,has less resistance and overall more pleasant and fun to do e.g watch an inspiration video,create a todo list that you know you will ignore,make some notes or jot some S.M.A.R.T goals in your fancy app that you will never use, and the list can go on and on.

The reason this one easily catches you out is because you tell yourself the same lie each time.You tell yourself that you will wake up tomorrow and stop whatever you must not be doing and automatically start to work on that activity you have deferred for so long.In almost all instances this never works and there are a couple of reasons why

I know that it might sound to you like it is a hopeless situation, but the truth is that any person who really wants to overcome something needs to be aware of the battles ahead and accept that it will not be a walk in the park.

There is however a solution that is very simple that we both know works every time, can you guess what it is ?.The antidote is very simple , start today!, in fact start right now.I do not care if you do not read the rest of the article and this is the only key take away you get, you will be grateful to yourself later.Spend the next 15–30 mins working on that book,that song, that screenplay,that workout,that business plan or whatever you have been holding back on.Do it right now and come back to read the rest of this article if you desire.Once you start working on something you will build some momentum and very soon you will find yourself wanting to continue working, but non of that will happen until you start today and better yet right now i.e this precise minute!

Show me any successful person you know or admire.What is it that you adore about them?.More often than not, these people we revere and look up to are people who seem like they have it all figured out.They have managed to overcome or accomplish something that we ourselves wish to do or at least emulate to some degree.What we do not see or avoid to overthink about is these people in the making (i.e pre-success era), we do not see them when they are a work in progress,we do not not see the countless times that they experience failure and stumble over and over again.

The final product that is polished and complete is always better to look at than whatever is still being developed and it therefore makes sense that as humans we always gravitate to what is more appealing and great to adore.This is the same thing that makes us enjoy movies ,books, auto biographies that narrate a ‘from zero to hero’ story that is bound to captivate us without a doubt.

Why then do we not want to go through the phase where we ourselves are the zero and are experiencing failure?Quite frankly,its because it sucks and it is painful to experience a tremendous amount of setbacks and keep going forward.The strange thing is that it is very difficult to avoid this phase if you are ever to truly succeed.All those successful actors, sportsmen, politicians, writers,businessman that you admire have gone through these phases and still have their fair share of challenges that they overcome daily.The difference is that they are now much more comfortable and familiar with failure and setbacks than you realize.You are ready to give up at the first signs of failure and the people who succeed are doing the exact opposite i.e they are going to try again, and again and again.

If you truly want something bad and believe you are capable of achieving it then there is really no reason at all to give up and quit trying.Do not look at those overnight success stories and think it is the norm.Real success requires grit and the ability to keep trying until things start to get easier and eventually they will feel so natural such that when people see you do what you are great at they will think you are super talented, gifted,or even assume you have some heroic super powers.What you did was not give up and you kept trying again whilst everyone else gave up, and now you get to enjoy the success that the majority of the people were not willing to fight for because they gave up too easily.

Who is your biggest cheerleader? Who is the person who tells you to keep going on even when the odds are firmly stacked up against you.If you answered anything other than “myself”,you are going to be disappointed sooner or later in life.

This is not me trying to promote some sort of narcissistic character or tendencies, but honestly i want you to really give this some thought.If you do not believe in yourself to the fullest extent possible, how then can you possibly expect another person to believe in your goals and dreams, support you and be your greatest cheerleader?.These goals are yours to begin with, yes you might have a supportive spouse,family,mentor or whatever but you must not forget that they also have their own goals,dreams and ambitions and they need to put those first before yours.Its only natural to do so.

If you look at most of the things you own,the career you have or people in your life, there was probably a time you had to belief in yourself and told yourself that you are going to get that promotion, college degree ,ask that person out for a date or any other bold move you undertook.No-one could support or force you to do it unless you first believed that it was achievable and that is exactly how you accomplished those things.

Use this same mentality with anything you want to accomplish in life and you will succeed.What makes you think that this time around you need people to believe and be your cheerleaders when you yourself are in doubt?

You cannot achieve what you cannot believe and today is the day that you shall tell yourself that “I am my biggest fan”,”I am my biggest supporter”,”I am legend!”,because trust me, if you do not tell yourself this, no-one ever will.

The moment you begin to travel on this journey to success, you will soon realize that there is actually no destination that exists.Each time you overcome something you will find out that there is more to be done and you keep accepting the next challenge without end.

This is a very common human trait and it is very difficult to truly understand the magnitude in difference between how we think or feel about something before we have it and after we have attained it.

Its fun to fantasize about what things could be,how we are going to feel when we accomplish X & Y, how we will be so happy when we finally get that <insert desire here>.

Reality however has shown us time and time again that we are almost always wrong about what we fantasize about the future.What we need to do is to accept the fact that our minds are going to change, our perspectives are going to be shaped by various life experiences ,new found knowledge, maturity or a plethora of other factors.Our duty in order to succeed is therefore to know how to pivot and realign our goals to help us achieve some wins.

Do not however confuse pivoting with giving up in times of failure or setbacks as it is not the same thing.We need to re-evaluate the smaller individual goals we are striving for to see if they still align well with our overarching goal.In other words, the direction does not change,if we are going north we will continue to travel in that direction,however the specific route we choose may be modified along the way.Giving up means going north today,turning all the way to south tomorrow and heading west the day after that which is why you end up exactly where you began, which is nowhere.

It makes sense that whatever you desired two or five years ago might be totally irrelevant today as circumstances and other factors are greatly at play.You therefore need to evaluate periodically to make sure you are not chasing something that is no longer necessary and also to make sure that you are not missing out on something that you should probably be doing.

There is no method to this,other than to be vigilant and accept that your original plan is going to change no matter how perfect you think it is.The only question is will you change it for the better or for the worse ?

The human mind is designed to be always in survival mode.You might think this is something glamorous like being a warrior such as Spartacus, but it is actually the opposite.

As humans we are trained to avoid things that give us negative feelings such as pain,worry,discomfort and sadness.Living in the digital age makes it even worse as we are armed with all kinds of arsenal to avoid even the slightest feeling of discomfort.How then can we be surprised by the abuse of cell phones, opioids ,alcohol,binge-watching crazes and anything else most people spend their evenings and weekends doing in order to avoid confronting the discomfort that lays in hard work and perseverance?.

I am not going to judge your actions or life choices,but i am just going to insist that you get comfortable with the discomfort you are going to face whenever you embark on a mission to succeed in anything meaningful.

The resistance you shall face might even surprise you,doubt me ?.Try this, tell your friends who you go drinking with after work or on weekends that you are no longer participating and instead you want to use that time to work on something important to you such as a side business etc.The responses you will get from your friends, family,colleagues or even romantic partners may surprise you.What you are telling them is that you have decided to be uncomfortable,to experience pain, setbacks and failure and they will most likely not understand why you would want to do that.This is not because your friends are shallow minded and cannot conceptualize your plans,no..not at all.They are fully aware of what it takes (because they also think about it, who doesn’t?), have most likely tried it themselves and given up.

Where are you getting this energy to do such a change they wonder, after all they believe they know you very well ,and you are incapable of transforming yourself to be that person, or so they think?.That is just a single example of resistance you can face but the biggest obstacle that stands between who you are today and who you want to be in the future is yourself!.

The five points mentioned in this article all work together as a single unit and cannot be separate. You need that self belief, that ability to try again, the sense of urgency to begin today,the constant evaluation and the discomfort that comes with all of these doings.

The only person who can answer these tough questions and act on them is yourself.You do not need to be a master or tell yourself i will wake up a different person as all of that does not work.

All you need to do is take those baby steps and work on whats important for 15–30 minutes.Do the same tomorrow and the day after and continue doing that for 21 days,2 months,3 months and you will be surprised with the amount of work you have managed to accomplish.You were at zero and now you are just left with ‘X’ amount to reach your goals.I wish you all the best and i know you will succeed!
