In conversation with Sarah from DitsyBirdDesign

In the second interview of my #mindfulmakes campaign I spoke to Sarah who is the designer and owner of DitsyBirdDesign. She loves to draw and describes herself as being big on detail which is evidenced in the work she creates. She loves what she does and believes that spreading happiness is a fine thing to do and with that in mind she designs and creates items aimed at putting a big smile on your face.

I asked Sarah

I can’t remember not creating. My mum was a keen amateur seamstress, embroiderer, flower arranger etc, and my dad was always doodling, sketching, bit of painting, and mad keen Airfix model maker. I think I was always drawing, or sewing. I honestly can’t remember not being creative.

2. Who was the main influence on your work?

Mum and dad definitely made creativity seem a normal part of ordinary life. Now I can clearly see my dad’s influence in my work…very detailed; pencil sketch first; pen and ink drawings; watercolours and I even use his old dip pens and nibs. Mum encouraged me to try lots of different types of creativity, which I think is why I don’t stick to one medium. It feels natural to try different things for different pieces, but I have my favourites.

3. Who is your favourite other maker?

I couldn’t name one favourite…there are so many incredibly inspiring artists and makers out there, and in so many mediums

4. If you weren’t a designer/maker, what profession would you most like to do?

I wanted to go into aromatherapy and massage when I was 18, but my parents couldn’t afford the course, and I couldn’t get a grant for it…I ended up doing accountancy up until 2015! Total opposite.

5.What words of encouragement would you give to someone who said they can’t make something because they weren’t arty?

I would say just try! Creativity comes in so many forms. It doesn’t have to be painting or drawing, it can be cooking, baking, interior styling, gardening, photography, beauty and makeup, hair styling, putting fabulous, unique outfits together…I would say that everyone is creative or arty in so way of another nearly every day. Also, only a very few people are born with a truly great artistic talent. Most work at it…practicing and playing to find which medium and style suits them, and slowly honing their skills as they grow older.
