Beginners Guide on Creating Typography System

Design system is more than typography but I thought on sharing how I make type system and use it to make the design cohesive.

Below you will see how how using photo montage helps to have a quick look if which typeface would fit based on user.

Let’s create two different sizes for body text and call it Body 1 and Body 2

Most of the time, 14px–16px should work fine for Body 2. Different typeface have variety of x-height and cap height. You could use Row Height of your grid to set base size of body text.

When line length is wider, it is ideal to have taller line height so user eyes won’t be distracted while reading each paragraph one by one.

When line height is too tight, it is hard to focus on each paragraph. When it is to loose, it takes more time to move to next paragraph.

Use the baseline to create rhythm.

Your system needs to be flexible. You need to add too center and right alignments.

Add Bold Weights

Make sure that the sizes you used are enough to create a strong contrast. I simply double the body 2 size as basis for headings sizes which will keep the proportion.

Similar to body text you need to add secondary weights and alignments

Don’t forget to typeset each headings the line height and line length similar on how we did it on body text when there is more than one paragraph. Consistency is important to make the design unified.

Sketch auto rename each layer based on content, so you need to rename them again.

Let’s start with Body 1

Renaming by alignments and make white version

Once everything is renamed, duplicate the artboard and create white version as seen below.

Your layers should look the same if you successfully renamed the fonts and their alignments

Select both all the fonts then go to Plugins / Styles Generator.

You should be able to see all the styles if the plugin does its job.
