Why I Chose to Identify Within Two Areas of Graphic Design

It has not been long since I accepted that graphic design is what I decided to do for a living, and I do not have that many objections against it.

In the article written by Elisha-Rio Apilado titled “What Type of Graphic Designer Are You?” I considered several of the options, but the ones that caught my attention were not the ones I always thought of. I thought I was going to be some “Simple Brander” just because I enjoy relating to clients and trying to satisfy their needs. However, after some consideration, I feel like my personality lies in a healthy middle between “The Public Designer of Publications” and “The Websters of Web Design.”

I enjoy designing for the public, I like words and puns are definitely high in my list of favorites. Speaking multiple languages also allows me to explore how working in different languages feels and which languages I prefer when exploiting my creativity. I am a firm believer in the impact of typefaces across languages varies, and how its correct and incorrect use can be equally impactful, with opposite repercussions. However, that is not the only area of graphic design that I like to engage in. Web design is another area that brings me satisfaction. Being able to make designs that are interactive and functional gives me a more tangible way of measuring the impact of my work.

If I only displayed works that were meant to be looked at, without any further action needed to be taken by the audience, I would not be satisfied. That is why I feel like my professional desires lie somewhere in between enticing typographic literacy and functional and appealing designs. I have not yet encountered areas of graphic design that combine these two as effectively. I guess the problem lies in the fact that these two areas encompass a wide range of responsibilities, which would make it difficult for a person to undertake successfully.

Nevertheless, assuming that job-crafting is still a major trend by the time I join the workforce, I would make a note to let my employer know of my various interests.
